February 2026 Tax Deadlines: What You Need to Know

Hello Californians! Let's kick off February 2026 with some vital tax reminders from Christiansen Accounting. This month, we’ll cover estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and important Form W-4 deadlines.

February 2: Estimated Tax Payments

If you missed your last estimated payment by January 15, consider filing your 2025 tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) by February 2 to avoid potential penalties. Filing by this date ensures you won’t face late fees on your last installment. If you miss these cut-offs, remember, you have until April 15 to file and pay.

February 10: Tip Reporting for Employees

Have you pocketed $20 or more in tips this January? Make sure you inform your employer. A simple signed statement with your details or IRS Form 4070 will do. Include your name, address, Social Security number, employer's name and address, the period covered, and the total tips. Employers will calculate FICA and income tax withholding accordingly. If your wages don’t cover withholding, this amount will reflect in box 8 of your W-2, and you’ll need to cover it when you file.

February 17: Withholding Exemption Renewal

If you claimed withholding exemption on your Form W-4 last year, renew it with your employer by February 17 to maintain your status for another year.

Weekend & Holiday Adjustments:

Deadlines falling on weekends or holidays automatically rollover to the next business day that isn’t a holiday.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:

In light of recent natural events, keep in mind that tax deadlines may extend if your area is federally designated a disaster zone. For the latest updates, visit FEMA and the IRS: Disaster Declarations, IRS Tax Relief in Disaster Areas.
